Craiglist and Indeed are the Best Places to Find Jobs
Craiglist and Indeed are the Best Places to Find Jobs Today we had a chat with Heather Sanford, who is a jobseeker based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The reason I wanted to pick her brains on job hunting is that she is very prolific online and seems to know her way around social media better than most of us. If you think you can help Heather in any way, please get in touch pronto! Hi Heather, please tell us what type of job are you looking for and where? I am looking for a coordinator or specialist position in Marketing, Communications, Advertising, and/or PR. I have been looking primarily in Las Vegas, because that is where I live and I am unable to sell or rent my condo. How are things progressing? Slow. I am not just looking for a job; I am looking for my next career move. I want a company I can grow with, a position I can really enjoy, and it is a slow process. Some would say I am being too picky in this economy, but considering we can spend 40+ hours at work, I want to make sure that whatever I find, it is something I will be happy with. What is your take on the job market as a whole at the moment? Sluggish, especially in Las Vegas. There is so much competition out in there and not enough jobs. In addition, the companies that are hiring are paying significantly less because they can. Which routes do you use to get interviews and to what success? I use Craigslist and Indeed to find jobs. My last job was found through Craigslist, and Indeed offers an array of jobs from different job boards. It is like a one stop shop. I find social media platforms (i.e., Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) to be a waste of time, when it comes to finding work. It is great for networking and building an online presence but I have never found jobs on these social media platforms. I have received job offers from people on LinkedIn but it would be sales job, commission based only, and seemed fishy. Your best tips for job seekers out there? Know what to look for in a job posting, to avoid non-legitimate jobs (i.e. scams). If a company asks for a headshot or picture, it is not legitimate (unless it is a modeling job). If a company does not post a detailed job description, donât bother with it. If you think you are not qualified for a job position, but you know you could do it, still apply. You never know⦠Have confidence in yourself and your work. If you are not getting any responses on your resume, change it up. Why should an employer hire Heather Sanford right this instant? Because I am a creative thinker with an ability to size up a situation and bring new ideas to the table. I have exceptional leadership, planning and organizational skills. On top of that I have extensive experience in competitive and market research, analytics, creative development, branding and project management. You can connect with Heather on Twitter. Personal Brands Anti-Social Media - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Personal Brands Anti-Social Media - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Apparently, it is impossible to police every member of your company when it comes to stopping rude, disgusting, or ridiculous behavior. I think itâs fair to say that no matter what policies your management establishes, there are some people who remain too depraved or too stupid, or simply have too much time on their hands. And, I donât mean entry-level employees, junior managers, the wacky creative people, or the account executives on the road. Those are the usual suspects when we think of poor social media behavior, or the dark elves who forward off-color jokes and send pornography from company owned computers. We constantly lecture low-level and mid-level employees about what you may email or post, since everything becomes public at some point in time. Of course, pundits like me worry aloud that your personal brand is permanently corrupted because youâre tagged dancing with a bear in Cabo. They walk among us Well, stupid is an equal opportunity employer. Sometimes, itâs the guy at the very top that ruins it for everyone. Consider Randy Michaels, CEO of the Tribune Company â" at least until last Friday. Michaels created a âfraternity houseâ culture. Sounds like a fun big brand to link up with your personal brand, huh? No. At least not for women, and anyone with a sense of decency much less the laws about creating a hostile work environment. Just in case the Tribune Company, which has been operating under bankruptcy protection for two years and is crushed by a failed $8.2 billion buyout, doesnât have enough real problems, we now have bad behavior at the very top, dripping down. âA top lieutenant sent an internal memo with an Internet link featuring a racy video that included a bare-breasted woman pouring booze down her chest. The executive, Lee Abrams, resigned as Tribune Co.s chief innovation officer,â per the Huffington Post, Friday, October 22, 2010. With a title like âchief innovation officer,â youâd guess that social media and marketing and online distribution had to be part of Abramsâ assignment. Well, he clearly understands the concept of an email campaign. He just has no judgment when it came to the content of an email campaign. The Tribune Co. publishes the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, and owns more than 20 radio and television stations. Reputation woes Hereâs why Michaels and Abrams ruin it for all o f us. Our news outlets are shrinking. Every major news operation has cut back and many have folded. That means we know less and less about what is going on around the world, in our own countries and in our communities. Could there be a worse time to put the US on a news deprivation diet? No. In the face of the historic credit meltdown that we served up for the world and the evils we face: terrorism in Europe, genocide in the Congo, someone who claims she was a witch before running a neck and neck race in Nevada with the current Senate Majority Leader in the US Congressâ¦..well, the list is pretty long when it comes to what we need to know that we canât see with our own eyes. That would require news, real news. I was hoping that Jon Stewart, tweets in Iran, and the Ashton Kutcher-Demi Moore family were not going to be the funnels through which I understood the world. But with morons at the top of two major US newspapers sending pornography to each other rather than working on staying solvent, Iâm now getting my news from Tweetdeck and the Daily Show. Personal brands: you are often accused (sometimes by me) of forgetting how you hurt your reputation as well as the companies you work for, when you act imprudently. That doesnât mean your brand has to include prude. It just has to rise about emailing pornography, apparently. Author: Nance Rosen is the author of Speak Up! Succeed. 8 Secrets to Balance a Busy Week
8 Secrets to Balance a Busy Week When I originally wrote this article back in 2010, life was busy. I was traveling across the country for work and in business school in the evenings at the same time. I also carved out time to grow this blog on the side too. My weeks involved flying to Charleston, South Carolina for work, attending important client meetings all week and then heading straight back to San Diego to take a midterm. During weeks like that, I wondered what work-life balance was and where my âmeâ time went? Here are 8 ways to balance a busy week: 1. Designate mornings for yourself. I used to be in this awful habit of checking my email first thing in the morning hoping that it would âwakeâ me up. It woke me up but not in a good way, a very stressful way instead! I changed this awful habit and now check my phone only after breakfast. This is a good example of how technology is getting in the way of our work-life balance and helping us stay overly busy. 2. Plan now for long vacations later. Many people I used to work with couldnât imagine what their co-workers and clients would do if they left for a couple weeks. They were just to busy doing important stuff at work! In reality, they survive just fine and it actually gives others the opportunity to step up and take on more responsibilities that they would never have had the opportunity to do. It may surprise you what others around you are capable of. It will also help you in the long run if your co-workers can help you out in case you get sick or have an emergency. So book that trip to Europe now! 3. Be dedicated, but only do what you like. If you donât spend your days doing something that you believe in, you will be completely miserable. I know that I have to be working at something where I know I am making a difference or I will be one very bored chica. Dedicate yourself to something you believe in, not the corner office and a six-digit salary. [RELATED: How to Find This Elusive Work Life Balance] 4. Focus on one thing at a time. When people ask me how I worked full-time and went to school at night, I tell them that I focused on one day at a time and tried my best not to worry my midterms and office pressures that stressed me out. This might not be the best thing since I should probably should have started studying for that midterm but I think that this is how I was able to stay sane with my crazy schedule and responsibilities. My first quarter was rough but I eventually got the hang of it! 5. Exercise! You will be so much more productive if you stay healthy and make exercise a top priority. I trained for a marathon while getting my MBA and working full-time and it was amazing how much more energy I had after I would go for my runs to work on my blog and schoolwork too. 6. Maintain your energy by getting a good nightâs sleep. This is where technology is beneficial; you can catch up on your favorite TV shows tomorrow thanks to DVR! 7. It is OK to say no. You canât do everything and be everywhere at the same time. Schedule time on the calendar just for you and your family so you donât over-commit. 8. Learn to delegate tasks. You may think that no one can do it better than you, but if you can spend the extra time training that person to do it exactly like you want him/her to do it, you will be surprised at how much more you can get done as a team, rather than individually. The world of work has changed due to advancements in technology and the ever-changing global economy. For us to not be married to our work and miss out on âmeâ time and family time, lets examine our priorities and set boundaries. Be firm in what you can and cannot do. How do you balance your busy life? [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Writing a Resume With No Experience of Job
Writing a Resume With No Experience of JobWriting a resume is a very important first step in getting the job that you want. By writing your resume, you will be able to outline the responsibilities that you have for the position. You will also be able to state some of your specific skills that you possess that could be an asset for the new job.It is very important to understand that there are several steps that go into writing a resume. In order to get a job and make it as a successful one, it is imperative that you take the time and put in effort into getting your resume ready. This will help you become familiar with what the company is looking for.Writing a resume without experience is very important because it is not always clear in what position that you would be applying. The employer does not want to spend time and effort finding the right person to fill in the vacancy. If they find out that the resume is not updated properly, then the chances of the person getting the job incre ase. They can even send someone else or tell you to go find another position. However, if you do not have any experience of the job, it is a good idea to at least write a sample resume. While not all of the sample resumes are accurate, you will be able to get some idea of what the company is looking for. If you have experience of the job, it can be helpful to write a cover letter as well to explain what you can bring to the new position.Once you have your resume, you will need to print it out. You should make sure that you get rid of all paper that was used. You should also keep the original resume somewhere safe so that you will not forget about it.Once you have printed out your resume, you will need to scan it. Make sure that you bring the original copy to a laser printer so that you can use this as an effective replacement for the original resume. This is very important because the person who is hiring you may already have a resume of their own and this will give them the ability to use yours. It is best that you save the original resume so that if the hiring company asks for a replacement resume, you will have it.After the scan is done, you will need to write down the specific skills that you have that the company is looking for. This will help to highlight your skills and allow the employer to see them and get a better idea of what they want. If possible, they should talk to you to get a sense of your qualities. After you have written all of the sections of your resume, you will need to sit down and carefully review it to make sure that it is all accurate. Make sure that the information is in order and complete. This is very important so that the employer can see exactly what you are capable of doing.

Crafting an Action Plan for Your Executive Job Search
Crafting an Action Plan for Your Executive Job Search An executive job search is often an arduous journey, which can take up to several months to complete. However, like any journey, youâll reach your destination when you have a clear plan for how youâre going to get there. Crafting an action plan for your executive job search may seem tedious, but itâs necessary in order to expedite the process. If you donât know where to begin, professional resume writing services can help get you on the right track. You can also check out our four tips below for developing your action plan. 1. Know Your Target If you donât have a specific target, you have nothing to shoot for. Identify not only the industries youâre interested in, but also the companies or people involved in those industries. The key to writing resumes that get you hired is targeting them toward certain people or companies. Be specific, but realistic, when it comes to identifying your target. Consider the industry, the company, the culture, location and even the salary you desire to help you narrow down your options. 2. Make Your Message Consistent Some people tend to forget that theyâre selling themselves when theyâre on an executive job search. Your message about yourself and what you want to accomplish should be consistent across the board. If itâs not, you will eventually be exposed and could damage your reputation. Any of the best professional resume writing services can help you create a consistent message for your professional brand. 3. Determine Your Search Strategy In general, there are search strategies that work and some that donât. Of course, everyone can be successful in their own way, but it may not be the easiest way. Networking is the best way to search for an executive job, even if itâs not one of your strong suits. You could also call or visit different companies in person, search for recruiters on LinkedIn or other websites, or post your executive resume on different job boards. Networking and targeting individuals or companies usually yield the best results, but you may have to find your perfect mix through trial and error. 4. Track Your Progress Whether youâre creating your action plan or putting it into place, tracking your progress is helpful. Checking off different boxes from your plan will give you some added self-confidence to help you continue pushing forward. Just remember the target you identified earlier so you can know what youâre aiming for. At Professional Resume Services, we take pride in our ability to help executives with their job search, even if it just means putting together the best executive resume format. If you need assistance with your action plan for your executive job search, feel free to contact us at any time.
